Together Wellness gives residents some Oomph
Slipper soccer and armchair aerobics are among the physical activities residents in housing with extra care schemes across Yorkshire and Derbyshire have been enjoying.
Funded by Newground Together, Together Housing Group’s Harnessing Diversity Fund and Sport England, the exercise workshops are delivered by Together Housing Group staff and volunteers following training from social enterprise Oomph, who specialise in adapting sports to make them accessible for all.
So far 30 staff across 12 schemes have achieved their Exercise Leadership in the Community accreditation.
In addition to football, hockey and skittles, Oomph has introduced lesser know sports such as boccia, volleyball and curling.
Peter Jordan, Director of Newground Together, said: “In line with our Active Together programme supporting physical and mental wellbeing, the Together Wellness programme is enabling our residents to build flexibility and strength.
“However, it not only helps keep our residents fit and healthy, it is also a great way of breaking down the potential problems of social isolation by bringing them out of their rooms, and out of their shells, and reigniting their passion for sport.”
Georgina Sutcliffe, a resident at Mytholm Meadows in Hebden Bridge, said: “I’ve never had so much fun exercising. I’ve been doing different classes for years but this is definitely the best, it’s just great. You spend the sessions laughing so much you don’t even realise you are doing any exercise. I look forward to it every week. It’s great for your health and I definitely feel better for attending. The memory games are also a fun added extra and really get the brain ticking over.”
Since May this year, around 4,920 minutes of exercise have been delivered.
