Homeless unemployed man secures house and job thanks to Works Better
A man from Bradford who had been unemployed and homeless following a collapse in personal circumstances has secured a full-time job and a roof over his head.
When Pete* was referred to Works Better by the Job Centre he had been out of work for 6 months plus and as a result, was sofa surfing at a relative’s house.
Despite his extensive experience in office based roles and Analysing Data he had lost his confidence when he was assigned a Community Employment Advisor from Newground.
The advisor identified that housing was a priority so referred Pete to Smartmove to find some immediate accommodation and helped him through the bidding process for Together Housing.
It quickly became apparent that Pete had no form of photo ID, which was a barrier to housing and employment, so the advisor secured funding to enable Pete to apply for a provisional driving licence.
The advisor also identified a list of employment agencies to assure him of the flexible options available. As a result, Pete has now started work in a factory.
Works Better is part funded through the European Social Fund and delivered through a collaboration of six partners (Kirklees Council, Fusion Housing and Paddock Community Trust, Calderdale Council, Newground, Wakefield Council and Groundwork) across Kirklees, Calderdale and Wakefield.
